From staff reports
This weekend, the Friends of Sleeping Bear reported on ski and sledding conditions throughout the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
The Groomers have been out on both trails. Unfortunately, the lack of snow on the Heritage Trail meant that the south trail does not have classic tracks, but it has been rolled to form a really nice flat corduroy. Skate skiers will love this!
Heritage trail north of Glen Arbor had a little more snow, and we did get a set of classic tracks down.
Palmer Woods has the best snow conditions in the area. 6-8″ of fresh powder. Nice groom and classic tracks in most places.
Empire to Glen Arbor:
Wide, flat corduroy – good for skate skiers and fat tire bikes. No classic tracks.
Glen Arbor to Wheeler Road:
One set of classic tracks and wide, flat corduroy. Small base of only 1″ but good coverage.
Palmer Woods:
Best snow in the area. Good classic tracks and corduroy.
Dune Climb Sledding:
The Dune Climb looks great for sledding this weekend.
Backcountry ski and hiking trails (Old Indian, Platte Plains, Windy Moraine, Bay View, Good Harbor, Alligator Hill)
Fresh snow everywhere – about 2-3″ There is more at higher elevations, so Palmer Woods has about 6″ and lower elevations like Platte Plains has only about 2-3″.
Popular Hiking Trails (Empire Bluffs, Pyramid Point):
These busy trails will have packed snow and icy conditions after people get out hiking. Micro-spikes or Yak Tracks or hiking poles are recommended if you are going to hike these trails.
